Retaining Walls in Charlotte, NC
Charlotte yards are rarely flat. A properly built retaining wall turns a slope into usable space and protects everything downhill of it — but only if the footing, reinforcement and drainage behind the wall are done correctly. That's the part you can't see, and it's the part we refuse to shortcut.

How we build it
Step 1
Grade assessment
We evaluate the slope, soil and water flow, and design the wall height and placement to actually solve the problem.
Step 2
Footing & base
Excavation to stable soil, compacted base or poured footing sized for the wall's load.
Step 3
Wall construction
Block or poured construction with reinforcement, stepped correctly with the grade.
Step 4
Drainage & backfill
Gravel backfill and drainage so water pressure never builds behind the wall — the number one reason walls lean and fail.
Retaining Walls: cost in Charlotte
Retaining wall pricing depends mostly on height, length and drainage — small landscape walls start in the low thousands, while tall structural walls with engineered footings run well into five figures. We quote exactly, in writing, after seeing the slope. Project minimum is $2,000.
| What moves the price | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Wall height & length | Taller walls carry exponentially more load and need bigger footings. |
| Material | Segmental block, poured concrete and veneer finishes price differently. |
| Drainage requirements | Wet slopes need more aggressive drainage systems behind the wall. |
| Access & excavation | Machine access to the slope changes excavation time significantly. |

Retaining Walls — common questions
Why do retaining walls fail?
Almost always water: pressure builds behind the wall because drainage was skipped. Proper gravel backfill, drain pipe and weep paths relieve that pressure — it's the least visible and most important part of the build.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
Many municipalities require permits and engineering above certain heights — commonly around four feet. We'll tell you what your wall needs during the site visit and handle the conversation with you.
